How To: Shoot a Step Back Jumper

Learning and mastering new basketball moves is like adding new tools to your toolbox.

Look at players like Kobe Bryant.  He has so many different ways to score on his defenders and today I will be demonstrating and breaking down one of those moves…The Step Back Jump Shot.

Basketball moves that create space like this one does are great because they are basically a counter to good defense.  I personally use this shot alot because I don’t have blow by quickness and alot of time the defense does a good job of cutting me off.  That is when I simply give them a little bump and step back to create space and drill the jump shot.

When executing this move there are few things you need to remember:

  • Don’t step back, step sideways
  • Don’t fadeaway on your shot
  • Make sure you get squared up by focusing on turning your hips in the air
