How To Triple Threat In Basketball

If you’re new to basketball you might simply be wondering, what is triple threat?

Triple Threat: Your offensive stance anytime you have the basketball in your hands.

The triple threat is a basketball fundamental that all players need to work on and have in their game.

There actually is a way to teach the triple threat to your players as well.

Most coaches usually just tell their players, “You need to bend your knees and put the ball in shot pocket.  Now that’s triple threat.”

But actually the way I like to teach it (especially to young kids and inexperienced youth players) is that it’s all about having the correct balance and the ability to change that balance to suite what you’re trying to do (blow by the defense, pivot, make a jab, etc.)

So enough with the introduction lets get deep into how to teach and use this basic fundamental.

Why Triple Threat?

To be dangerous

If you catch the ball and get squared up the rim every time you recieve a pass you are in a perfect position to make a player whether that is an assist, shot, or penetration.

When you catch the ball the first thing you should analyze is, “Am I open to shoot?”  If you are then hopefully you have worked hard in the off season and have the ability to knock down open jump shots.

If you’re not a threat on the offensive end you are hurting your team.

To save your dribble

The dribble is overused so much in this game.  Save it so that you stay dangerous.

It’s great to use if you’re working to make a play (penetrating), but if you’re not you run the risk of losing it if the defense makes you pick it up.

Plus if you are just dribbling in one spot you can’t make a pass fake or shot fake.

Ball security

bad triple threat position

As soon as you stand up right and put the ball over your head you are NOT in triple threat.

Don't let the defense do that to you and definitely don't do it without being forced into it.

Stay low, strong, compact, and most importantly...dangerous.

By putting the ball over your head you are risking a turnover.

Stay on balance in your position and keep the ball safe.

Plus basketball is a game of milliseconds and you don't want to miss your opportunity to hit a cutter, or blow by that aggressive defense.

Where, When, and Who Should Use The Triple Threat

Where

On the perimeter.

When

Anytime you catch the ball

Who

Mostly guards, because post players play down low with their backs to basket.

But if they do get a catch on the perimeter they most definitely should get right into triple threat.

How To Triple Threat

So as you can see balance is so important.

You want to be able to explode out of this stance so you want to have your weight shifted forward and be on the balls of your toes.

You should be able to slide a piece of paper under your heals.

To get the right forward balance simply:

  • Shift your weight forward.
  • Put your hands on your knees.
  • Now put a basketball in your hands.
  • Now transfer some of that weight onto your weak foot.
You got it!

The reason you want to transfer that weight more onto just one foot is that you can only push off of one foot at a time and the other foot needs to be light so it can step or jab step when needed.

When holding the basketball make sure your arm is in "The Cobra."

That means that the wrist and elbow are cocked and ready to go.

Now you're all set to jab, shot fake, pass fake, or whatever else out of triple threat.

Time to through a little extra sugar on top.

Here is a great move to keep the defense guessing.

You can listen to me all day long and not hear a thing, but when the "Greatest Of All Time" speaks, players seem to hang onto every last word he speaks.

So take a trip inside of MJ's minds and see what he's thinking when he catches the ball and how he is able to play with his defender.
