This is the ultimate Kyrie Irving basketball crossover breakdown where I am going to not only teach you how to crossover, but will give you 3 simple steps that will make your crossover dribble deadly.
So many players these days have never really had a coach, trainer, or teammate tell them how to properly execute a crossover, and that is why I created this step by step tutorial that will demonstrate exactly how to crossover and will give you 3 tips that make this move very effective.
To be honest, there are much more than just one way to cross someone up, but to keep it simple this is how you execute it:
- The dribble before the crossover is important because that is the dribble that is going to bring the ball out and begin the illusion that you are going in one direction when really you are crossing back over.
- After you bring the ball you you need to hesitate for a half a second to freeze the defense. With that hesitation you are putting the defense in a position where they will have to react to your next move.
- After the hesitation you need to give a final fake that you are going in one direction by getting into the “Attack Position.” (Watch video below to understand the “Attack Position”)
- Finally, simply crossover and blow by the defense. Remember, to keep the dribble low.

How To Crossover
The most famous Kyrie Irving crossover of all time had to be the one where he crossed up Brandon Knight and hit a step back jumper shot. Lets take a quick look at that and then I’ll explain how he was able to do this.
Kyrie Irving Crossover On Brandon Knight
Lets take a second to analyze what happened here:
- 0:01 Kyrie Irving is using crossovers to setup Brandon Knight and get him off balance
- 0:09 – Brandon Knight makes a mistake and repositions his footwork
- 0:12 – Kyrie Irving uses an “In N Out” dribble to give the illusion he’s going right
- 0:13 – Brandon Knight falls for the “In N Out”
- 0:14 – Kyrie crosses over and Knight thinks he’s going to the basket
- 0:16 – Kyrie steps back to create space and shooter the basketball
- 0:17 – Brandon Knight goes down in flames, lol
In summary there are three main factors that made this legendary play happen.
- Brandon Knight repositioning his feet.
- Kyrie Irving getting Knight off balance with that “In N Out” dribble
- Kyrie’s good “Attack Position” on his crossover.

October 23, 2015This last week i have been working on just this move. At first it was hard, i was doing everything mentioned in the video but no-one was falling for my crossover. I watched the video 5 times before i realized what i was doing wrong. I wasn’t bringing my back foot towards the direction i was faking before crossing over. This isn’t something mentioned in the video and i believe it should be because when i did this my opponent fell for it every time.
