Most people who watch basketball simply for entertainments usually hate it when teams start to foul at the end of the game.
It really does make the last 30 seconds of a game turn into 10 to 15 minutes of foul shooting.

As a player it's great when your team is up by 5 points with 30 seconds left and you can finish the game off by adding 6 points to your stats that night by knocking down 6 free throws in a row, lol.
Anyways, in today's podcast I basically act out a situation where my team uses fouls to extend the last 21 seconds, turn the game into a free throw battle, and eventually win the game.

Here are a few key strategies that happen in the game that I don't explain in the podcast.
- Anytime you are down at the end of a game and there is less time on the game clock than the shot clock you MUST foul. Otherwise the other team will basically try and run the clock out.
- If the clock permits it, it's always a good idea to try and trap first before fouling to give yourself a chance at a steal.
- The other team tried intentionally fouled us to put us on the line even though they were up by 3 with 11 seconds left because they would rather give us 2 points at the free throw line then risk having us hit a three for the tie. I personally don't like this strategy although I've seen many teams do this and if Kobe Bryant is on the other team I might consider fouling too.
- Whenever you are fouling at the end of a game make sure you go for the ball so you don't get called for a flagrant foul.

February 1, 2015Hey Coach,
I’d really appreciate a podcast on how to increase basketball IQ, make better decisions, and particularly train reacting to defense.
I struggle in live game situations because I don’t have a good grasp on the 5 on 5 skills listed above: even though I’ve trained the tools to make an impact, I don’t have good ideas on when to use them. I study game film and talk it over with my coaches, yet I still struggle making the right decisions in games. A podcast on this topic would be appreciated.
Thanks! — Royce #15

February 1, 2015HEY ROYCE! Thanks alot for the comment and topic suggestion. I think that is a great idea, and is actually a pretty difficult thing to give advice on, but I will take a look at it and try and give my perspective. It’s actually something that I get asked alot from players all over. They are skilled and work on game situations, but when they actually play in a real game they don’t make the right reads and decisions. I”ll for sure dive into this.
