Podcast 9: Point Guard Responsibilities

point guard responsibilities

In today’s episode I discuss point guard responsibilities as well as cover all of the other things going on in my basketball journey at this point in time.

As you probably know the point guard position has the ball more than any other position in basketball.

Therefore PG’s need to have great decision making and need to be able to run a team just like the quarterback in football.

I played PG throughout my entire high school career and was a pass first player and floor general.  I put the team first and was a big part of the reason that my team’s were successful, even though I was not putting up big time stats.

All I cared about was winning and that’s one attribute all point guards should have.

Question Of The Week

Hey guys, I need to work on my fitness so that I can play at least 20 minutes in a basketball game without getting too tired. Do you have any suggested workouts that don't require a gym?

  • 3 sets of 17's, each in a minute, with a 60 second break in between each set.

If you can think of any other good point guard responsibilities, leave a comment below.  I'd love to hear them and I know I didn't cover every single one in this post, so let me know!

    Hi Augie,

    Great Podcast!

I wonder if you could talk about injuries in one of the next podcast. In detail, how to overcome them mentally and what to do while injuried.

I’ve been training 6 times a week and played once a week for the past year, now I am suffering a high ankle sprain which is keeping me on my sofa since two weeks. The doctor says I have at least four more of those weeks in front of me.
The whole process it’s really tough to digest, especially because I cannot train. Next week I’ll start again upper body, and will try to do some very static ball exercises.

    Keep it up!

        Awesome, you rock!

It would be really great if could also give your opinion on taping/bracing.

I have been looking online and there are different opinions. The practice seem to be reducing the incidence of ankle sprain, but on the other side, it seem also to be weakening the ankles, because they get used to the support. Most importantly, someone says that taping/bracing, might be causing far more serious knee injuries (i.e. ACL). This because the ankle is meant to be a mobile joint and if it’s taped or braced, mobility is obviously reduced and the knee is the next joint that tries to compensate, but being a non-mobile joint, it basically can tear.

It would be great to have the opinion of a professional baller, as I think in basketball it’s a very used practice. But then I see Derrick Rose and I think he uses Adidas ankle braces and has basically tore his knees apart over the last couple of years.

        Thanks!
