How To Shoot A Fadeaway Jump Shot Like Kobe Bryant

basketball moves for shooting guards

In this post I will teach you how to to shoot a fadeaway jump shot, and more importantly, show you a move that you can steal from Kobe Bryant to get that fadeaway shot off almost every time.

Everyone knows it…Kobe studied Jordan.

He saw how Jordan would post up and use turnaround fadeaways all the time to score the basketball.

So Kobe goes and makes it his bread-and-butter-go-to-shot.

And that there was flat out genius…why?

Well kobe is 6’7″, a pretty good jumper, an excellent shooter, and has a super high release.

So when he spins away from you and then fades you really can’t contest it.

Check him out in action below…

In both of those clips he scores using that same spin move fadeaway, and even though there are two players there he is still able to get a look at the basket and make the shot.

Lets go ahead now and get into the move and break it down:

Like I stated in the video you need to first be able to execute a spin move and once you have that down you can start think about trying this move.

I don't want to over complicate this move because it's not a very hard move to execute.

However, it is a hard move to actually score with due to the fact that you're shooting a fadeaway jump shot.

Fadeaways are for more advanced players that are at least at the varsity level.

I don't know very many coaches that like when their players shoot fadeaways, period.

It's a lower percentage shot and not very fundamental at all.

But once you learn how to shoot a fadeaway, and have practiced it enough out of the spin move to show improvement, you will build confidence in it, and in time be able to use it in games.

Here are a few things to consider when using this move:

  • Make sure you have space to spin
  • Do your best to stay on balance after you spin
  • Don't over fade, ideally you don't have to fade at all
  • It's easy to miss short on fadeaways so remember that

Like I said earlier...

If you plan on using this move then you need to practice it.

Below this there is a video of a perfect drill to work on this move.
